Make-A-Wish® BC & Yukon Celebrates World Wish Day®
Wednesday, April 29th was World Wish Day® - a global day of recognition for Make-A-Wish® that celebrates all of the magical wishes granted to courageous children with life-threatening medical conditions around the world.
This year, Make-A-Wish® BC & Yukon celebrates three special wishes; Kiarra, 8 years old with Cystic Fibrosis who wished to go to the Grand Cayman Islands; Kenny, 15 years old with Cystic Fibrosis who wished to have an Electronics/Gaming Room and Tristan, 15 years old with Severe Crohn’s Disease who wished to go to the LEGO factory in Denmark.
“We have granted over 1,700 wishes to date in our region.” says Ross Hetherington, CEO, Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon. “Wishes change lives and World Wish Day allows people from across Canada and the world to come together to help make wishes come true.”
Events took place coast to coast with Canadian Landmarks (such as BC Place, TELUS World of Science Vancouver, Olympic Cauldron/Jack Poole Plaza, Canada Place Five Sails, Niagara Falls, and the CN Tower) illuminated in festive blue and white lights.
About World Wish Day®
April 29 was World Wish Day®, a global celebration of wish granting. It celebrates the day seven year old Chris Greicius received his wish to be a police officer, inspiring the creation of Make-A-Wish® and the organization’s global wish-granting movement.
About Make-A-Wish® BC & Yukon
Since 1983, Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon has granted over 1,700 wishes for children with a life-threatening medical condition.
Each wish carries a child and their family from a place of uncertainty to a place of Hope, Strength and Joy.
Our goal is to refocus attention on the positive by providing a unique, once-in-a-lifetime wish experience that a family might not otherwise have.

Proposal of Fed Budget links Charities to Real Estate Tax Exemption
In an article featured in the Real Estate section of Business in Vancouver dated April 22, 2015 by Frank O'Brien, the April 20 budget proposes tax exemption for the capital gains arising from the real estate sale if the proceeds are donated to a qualified charity.
According to Clay Gillespie, managing director of Rogers Group financial in Vancouver, the exemption applies only to commercial real estate investors and not to principal residences, which are already free of capital gains taxation.

Board Report
The Governor’s met on March 27 in Vancouver. Some of the highlights of this meeting included the President’s Report, we can look forward to Jason Grant’s final message in INPUT magazine. We are also reviewing the structure of our chapters to see if the model we have been using for years should be changed or confirm that it should remain intact. We will discuss in more detail at the June meeting.
Business items discussed included a request for a leave of absence, terms of reference, some of our policies and standards. Every Governor’s meeting includes a review of a part of our bylaws, Part 5 & 6 were the topic of discussion during this meeting.
Doug Janzen, President of the AIC-BC was in attendance and gave our Board an update on some of the items they are working on including their National Conference to be held in Kelowna from June 3 to 6.
A reminder to everyone that the deadline for the Honorary Member and Award of Excellence is May 1, 2015. These are awards that recognize individuals in our industry for their contributions that we all benefit from, so I encourage you to submit your nominations.
Respectfully submitted by,
Tracy Wall, RI Governor, Thompson/Okanagan District
