Board of Governor’s Report

Your Board of Governors met on June 14, 2012.  In order to keep our membership aware of the issues at hand, the following is a brief review of the meeting.

  • Peter Bretherton reported on the IPPAC (Interprovincial Professional Property Assessors of Canada).  Peter has been attending talks regarding interprovincial qualifications on behalf of REIBC and is working to keep the standards for education increasing.
  • Policy with respect the Recognition Dinner was discussed and approved.  The purpose of the Recognition Dinner is ensure that recognition is in accordance with REIBC’s Mission Statement.  The REIBC Award of Excellence is presented annually at the Recognition Dinner.
  • Janice O’Brien joined the meeting to update the Board on what is happening with the BC Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada.  She advised that Dan Wilson is now President Elect of AIC.  She also spoke briefly about the upcoming joint conference with the REIBC in 2013.
  • Secretary/Treasurer Dave Graham presented the Audited Financial Statements to the Board and noted that we have had an outstanding year showing an improvement of $50,000.
  • New terms of reference for the Climate Change Committee was submitted by the Co-Chairs to the Board and approved.
  • The Honorary Member Review Committee submitted an Honorary Member policy for approval by the Board.  This policy sets out 4 points that differentiate this award from the Award of Excellence.  The policy was approved.
  • Chapter Plans were put forward for discussion with the Governors.  The Governors will be contacting the Chapter Chairs in the near future to have the new plans put in place.
  • There was a review of the Golf Committee Terms of Reference.  There were a few items that raised some questions so it has been sent back to the committee for clarification.
  • There was some discussion with respect to whether Reinstatements can be done on-line rather than by paper. It was agreed that provided that the system has that capability then on-line reinstatement is acceptable.   Staff has been asked to write policy and bring it back to the Board.

It has been my pleasure to complete this review of the Board Meeting of June 14, 2012.
Respectfully submitted,

Bonnie Knight, RI
Governor for Fraser Valley

REIBC Annual General Meeting

On June 14, 2012 REIBC held it’s Annual General Meeting at the Terminal City Club in Vancouver.  There were 31 members present so quorum was reached.  This year there were changes made to the bylaws that the Board of Governors were asking the membership to approve.  Chapter structures were put forth that a chair can only be a chair for one term (2 years) and that the limit to sit on the chapter as a director is 8 years.  The Honorary Member status will change to specially recognize those members with honorary status and they will carry the RI with Honorary or HON on the end of it.  The auditors of the Institute cannot be a member or a staff person and the last change was adding a confidentiality clause to the Code of Professional Conduct.  The special resolution was passed unanimously.

Also announced at the meeting is the 2012-2013 Board of Governors which is as follows:

Thompson/Okanagan Tracy Wall
NWPR/Cariboo John Castle
Vancouver Island Peter Bretherton, Mark Litwin
Fraser Valley Bonnie Knight
North Fraser Mandy Hansen
Kootenay Dave Graham
Vancouver Andre Gravelle, Ken Sherk, Troy Abromaitis, Jason Grant

 The Executive is as follows:

President Andre Gravelle
President-elect Mandy Hansen
Vice President Mark Litwin
Secretary/Treasurer David Graham
Past President Nathan Worbets

The financials were also presented to the membership for approval and it was a good year to do that.  The Institute had a $50,000 change in position over last year and at the end of the year had a $32,000 surplus.  This is the first time in a number of years that a surplus has been achieved.

The AGM concluded its business by appointing the firm of Rolfe Benson LLP to conduct the audit again next year.

Recognition Dinner

On June 14, 2012 we held our Annual Recognition Dinner for members.  We had over 90 people that were eligible for their 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 year awards.  At the event we had 26 people in attendance to recognize and everyone did a fine job answering the trivia from the year they became a member.  Congratulations to everyone!

Also that evening Steve Mullock, RI was recognized for his years of service as the appointee from the Institute to the Real Estate Foundation of BC.  Steve sat as a Governor on the Real Estate Foundation Board for 6 years and was Chair for one of those years.  Thanks again Steve.

The Annual Recognition dinner is also the time that REIBC honors one of its own with the Award of Excellence.  This year, the award winner is Mr. Robert Fawcett, EO of the Real Estate Council of British Columbia.  Robert is a remarkable member and you can see the full presentation on our website at http://www.reibc.org/2012_award_of_excellence.html

To top off the evening, entertainment was presented by the Langley Ukulele Ensemble: they were amazing and received a standing ovation from the audience.  For 45 minutes they played, sang and had fun which meant REIBC’s guests had a great time as well.

19th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

The REIBC golf tournament was held on June 20, 2012 at the Northview Golf and Country Club.  Once again it was a wonderful day and great time was had by all.  We think the weather was ordered specifically for that day.  The sun shone and it was about 22 degrees.  Unbelievable as the day before we were wondering if parkas were going to be needed.  At this time there is no final figure on the amount that we will be giving to Make-A-Wish.  We will keep you apprised of that as all the expenses are paid.

The young wish family that joined us this year was a family from Surrey,  Kelly and Kent McIver along with their two daughters, Kierra and Katrina.  Both Kierra and Katrina have Cystic Fibrosis.  The family went to Florida and swam with the dolphins and Kelly noted that “the family was brought back together outside of the illness.”  They are very thankful for tournaments like ours that help raise funds for Make-A-Wish.

The winning team this year was the team led by Todd Mikl.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this great tournament and a huge thank you to the organizing committee for doing such a great job.  Look for more information on this event in the October edition of the INPUT magazine.

Once again, thanks to everyone.

Former Sauder professor returns from UC Berkely to take helm as Dean

After a year-long search, the University of British Columbia announced that Professor Robert Helsley will return to the Sauder School of Business as its new dean. Professor Helsley, most recently of the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, started in the position on July 1. He replaces Sauder’s outgoing dean, Daniel Muzyka, who stepped down on June 30 after 13 years.

A senior associate dean at Sauder from 2002 to 2008, Professor Helsley also served as director of the UBC Centre for Real Estate and Urban Economics, and as chair of the Urban Land Economics division.

“I look forward to returning to Sauder, renewing my relationships and building on the remarkable growth the school has experienced in the past several years,” said Professor Helsley. “It will be a great pleasure to lead Sauder as it continues to build its international reputation for research and teaching excellence.”

REIBC welcomes the new Dean at Sauder School of Business.
