Board of Governor’s Report

Your Board of Governors met via conference call on April 26, 2012. In order to keep our membership aware of the issues at hand, the following is a brief review of the meeting.

  • Institute Bylaws are in need of various updates. The bylaw changes will go before the membership for approval at the Annual General Meeting on June 14th, 2012.
  • Policy issues were discussed. Two issues in particular were in focus: the Recognition Dinner and Event Pricing. While one policy is in the process of being rewritten, the event pricing was approved.
  • Membership Leave of Absence was a topic of discussion. The current policy dictates that applications for leave must come to the Board for approval. While approval for leave is case specific, further information is required.
  • The Award of Excellence in Real Estate is presented annually at the Recognition Dinner. A discussion was held regarding the Committee.
  • In 2013, the Real Estate Institute and the BC Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada will be holding a joint conference. Two locations are being considered and discussions are ongoing as to any preference or further possible locations.
  • There is a Member Services Committee that consists of four members. Discussion centered on using the member survey to recognize needs of members and also review the Terms of Reference for the committee. The committee will meet monthly going forward.
  • Nominations for elections of Board and Chapter level positions are now closed. Elections will take place in the upcoming weeks. Thank you to all members who have stepped forward or have let their names stand for these positions. Elections were not required in Vancouver Island District, North Fraser District and Fraser Valley District. Vancouver District will be having an election.

It has been my pleasure to complete this review of the Board Meeting of April 26th, 2012. I would also like to remind all of the upcoming Recognition Dinner and Annual General Meeting to be held on June 14th, 2012.

Respectfully submitted,

John Castle, RI, AACI, P. APP.
Governor for Cariboo, Northwest/ Prince Rupert Districts.

Extreme Makeover – Whole Building Retrofits Breakfast Panel

There are over 5,000 high rise buildings in major Canadian cities and tens of thousands worldwide. A staggering number of these buildings are now 30 years or older and in need of complete retrofits if they are to continue to perform efficiently and remain attractive to tenants. What is industry doing to meet this challenge? What is the opportunity for incorporating energy efficiency practices and achieving operational efficiencies and cost savings? And what are the challenges we are going to face in the future retrofitting the new buildings of today?

Many in industry are seeing renewal as an opportunity and are now developing whole building retrofit programs aimed at addressing the challenge. “Extreme Makeover: Whole Building Retrofits” will bring together building owners and experts from building sciences, architectural design, engineering, operations, and management to discuss one of the great challenges facing the building sector in the 21st century. Brought to you by Light House Sustainable Building Centre in partnership with BOMA BC.

Date: Tues, June 5th 7:30am-10:00am
Location: Downtown Vancouver
Tickets: $65 including tax and a full buffet breakfast.
