REFLECTIONS ON THE REIBC
PAT MUNROE shares his heartfelt thoughts as he reflects on his time with the Institute.

In 1980, shortly after obtaining my qualifications specializing in Real Estate and Urban Development while attending UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning , I applied to be a member of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia (REIBC).
Once I was accepted as a member I was able to fully realize the importance of the REIBC to my career in the real estate industry and what it could help me accomplish.
As a member of the REIBC, I would be associated with others who respected the importance of the industry for its role in the economic prosperity and social stability of our communities in British Columbia.
The standards set by the Institute in the principles of integrity and ethical conduct in the Code of Conduct would be a guide for me during the following years.
I soon found myself both on the Board of Directors, Real Estate Institute of BC, Education Committee, and the President, of the Real Estate Institute of Canada, Vancouver Chapter. Along, as well, with service in the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver: Arbitration Committee, Business Practices and Professional Conduct Committee and others.
Serving four years on the Task Force on Housing Issues in North Vancouver and bringing together the many North Vancouver Community Associations lead to my getting elected as Municipal Councillor for the District of North Vancouver, for two three year terms. During that time, being appointed to the Housing Committee for the GVRD and the Board of Directors of the Greater Vancouver Housing Corporation serving 25 municipalities.
So, one thing leads to another. Like many other members of the REIBC, I became active and served in the following community, regional or provincial organizations, namely:
- Edgemont Community Association - Founding President
- North Vancouver Recreation Commission
- North Vancouver Library Board
- North Vancouver Police Liaison Committee
- North Shore Family Court and Youth Justice Committee
- BC Parole Board- Appointed by the Lieutenant Governor
- Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Commission - Alternate Member
- T'Sleil Watuth Treaty Table - Municipal Representative
What I value most about my volunteerism is playing a small part in the overall activities which help contribute to a healthy and vibrant community. And to build on that, it’s the like-minded people with whom you work alongside who truly make it worthwhile.
In my real estate career, I have been an owner operator of my own strata management company, also active in real estate brokerage, mortgage brokerage and property management.
As a 35 year member of the Real estate Institute of British Columbia, I feel very appreciative of the great opportunities which allowed me to have a fulfilling career, while being involved in meaningful volunteer activities and ensuring quality time with my family. I could not have hoped for more.
I have much respect for those who have followed and are doing remarkable service for the real estate industry and are in service to the people of the GVRD and surrounding communities in British Columbia.
In my retirement now in the South Cowichan on Vancouver Island, I have been the president of a bare land, gated sea side resort-like strata community of over 600 homes, am still serving on a British Columbia provincial Appeal Tribunal, as well as Chair of my local church council.
But most of all I play three rounds of 18 hole golf each and every week. We continue to spend tropical sunshine time south every winter, and a month or so at our family cottage every summer. Although I have scaled down my activities, my life continues to be full and active with community, friends and family..
We sincerely thank you Pat and wish you continued health and happiness on the golf course and beyond!

Office condos could become Metro Vancouver's next hot strata sector, according to industry studies that point to $280 million worth of sales in the last two years. Some office condos are even selling for more than their residential comparative. Such growth around the strata sector could mean opportunities for us to increase exposure and possible uptake of our Strata Governance Certificate Program.

The soaring price of residential real estate is one of the biggest impediments to Vancouver’s economy, and could weigh on future business growth and formation, says a prominent local economist.
“How do you grow a global-scale company in Metro Vancouver if your employees, particularly your employees in the age where they start families, can’t afford to live here?” said Jock Finlayson, vice-president and chief policy officer for the Business Council of BC.
“Looking ahead I am fearful of a hollowing out of corporate Vancouver.”
