We would like to introduce new RI:

2020_events/choo.JPGChoo-Ming Yeak, RI

After working for the Singapore Government for 10 years, my wife Angela encouraged me to venture overseas in 2010. After 3 years in Vancouver, I graduated with a Masters in Urban Studies with the Simon Fraser University, and landed myself a Property Information Collector position with the BC Assessment. I then got an Appraiser position with the same company at their Capital Office and moved to Victoria about a year later.

In my 5 years as an appraiser with the BC Assessment, I’ve been involved in the assessment of residential properties and in recent years found a niche in the assessment and valuation of rural residential and vacant properties. The assessment cycle is like the 4 seasons: there is something dominating your work each quarter. In the first quarter, we handle assessment appeals; the second quarter sees us catching up with our core work like sales analysis; the third quarter usually ushers the end of the second round of assessment appeals and projects; and the last quarter signals the start of the assessment roll production. There is never a boring season on my job and that keeps me motivated.

When I am not working, I’ll be spending time with my family and this photo is my latest with my youngest son Joel out at Thetis Lake, where we got a 17-inch small mouth bass.

Welcome Choo-Ming!

2020_events/jon.jpgNew Govenor:

Jon Burbee, RI has been appointed as the Governor of the Vancouver Island District for the Real Estate Institute of BC.

Jon Burbee has spent most of the past 30 years supporting the public sector across a broad range of specialties in real estate. For Jon, the appeal of working in the real estate sector is the role it plays the well-being of society and individuals, even more so presently.Through his work in community planning, capital project delivery, and property management, he’s experienced the impact of the built environment on communities, the environment and individuals. In his role providing corporate real estate services such as asset management, risk management, and property taxation, he’s also seen the impact on the financial well-being of individuals, organizations, and communities. He’s energized by the opportunity to be part of the adaptation in real estate as a result of recent societal transformations.

Following a twenty-three year career in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Construction Engineering Officer building and operating public properties in Canada and in conflict zones abroad, he joined the public service first with the federal government and then with the Province of BC. In 2014 he assumed an executive director role with the Ministry of Citizens’ Services managing the owned portfolio of the provincial government (less health and education sectors) from Victoria. During the past year he has focused on work at the corporate level involving governance, digital services, service improvement, and typical corporate functions of human resources and finance. Jon holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Defence Studies (International Relations and Leadership).

Originally from Prince George and with roots in the Peace River and Kootenay regions, Jon now lives with his family in Victoria. He enjoys coaching youth sport and is active through endurance sport, paddling local waters, and recreational hockey.
