Important update to Entrance Requirements

At the Board of Governors meeting on October 1, 2015 the Board approved two new universities as qualifications to become an RI.   The universities are Ryerson University and University of Guelph, both from Ontario.  The programs they are offering are comparable to the UBC program and also the BCIT program that we currently accept as requirements.  A comparison was completed and the board felt that REIBC would do well to recognize the graduates of these two schools.  The program at Ryerson is called Real Estate Management and the Guelph program is called Real Estate and Housing.  This is a great change for the Institute and we will work very hard to advise those schools and those graduates that the RI designation - Real Estate Professional is available to them.

As not all programs meet the standard that REIBC has set, the University of Calgary has a certificate program that is called Real Estate Development.  The board has decided that this education will qualify if the person applying for their RI has at least 10 years’ experience.  This is the same qualification as the Registered Condo Manager course received a year or so ago.  We are very pleased to have these courses added to our entrance requirements.

Further in the meeting a policy was also approved that gave Executive’s an alternative to the regular entrance requirements.  This policy, entitled the Executive Entrance, speaks to those people that may not meet the Institutes regular requirements and have been in the real estate profession for a number of years and are in positions of executive leadership.

A great step for the Institute and we will work hard to ensure that all of the people who qualify in these in new areas know that they too can be designated as an RI – Real Estate Professional.

North Vancouver Walk & Talk

On October 28th, a group of RI members and guests made up of property managers, municipal staff, appraisers, brokers and developers met at the Lonsdale Quay for a “Walk & Talk” led by Heather Reinhold (Manager of the Waterfront Project at the City of North Vancouver). Heather painted a picture of future while describing the Central Waterfront Development Plan including the new Presentation House Gallery, the Shipyards plaza and the Spirit Trail. We then moved on to explore the Small House Demonstration where City of North Vancouver Manager, Susan Antoniali opened up these ‘tiny’ houses. Everyone had fun exploring and thinking about what life would be like living in under 500 square feet.

Finally we ended the event with a social at the newly built Tap & Barrel. For more information on the City of North Vancouver’s Central Waterfront Development Plan, visit cnv.org. Thanks again to Heather and Susan for such a great tour!

Liam Boultbee, Student member

The REIBC recently got an opportunity to touch base with the executive of the 2014-2015 BCIT Real Estate Association and they agreed to let us all know what they are up to now that they've entered the work-world.  We are sharing their stories!

Liam Boultbee

Liam Boultbee was the Vice President of Events for the BCIT Real Estate Association’s 2014-2015 year.  After graduating in May, Liam started a career in commercial brokerage by joining Cushman & Wakefield’s research department.  Recently, he acquired his commercial trader’s license and became a Sales Representative in the company’s Commercial Sales and Leasing department.  Liam is focusing on office leasing, and continues to use his teachings from BCIT to effectively service clients in the Burnaby, New Westminster, and Tri-Cities areas. He looks forward to developing this career path, and thanks REIBC for their continuous support of real estate students in the Lower Mainland.

When he is not working, Liam enjoys running and cycling.  He recently ran his first triathlon in July, and is beginning to train for next year’s GranFondo Whistler

REIBC Charity Golf Tournament

Last month the REIBC had the opportunity to present a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of BC & Yukon. $33,687.54 was raised at the tournament held on June 24, 2015.

We thank all of our sponsors and those who donated prizes to our annual Charity Golf Tournament! We are pleased to continue to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation grant wishes. We recently received an e-mail from Ross Hetherington CEO of Make-A-Wish letting us know that we were able to help grant Hunter's wish.

Dear Friends of Make-A-Wish,

Hunter’s wish came true because of you! It was a magical wish for all of us who were lucky enough to be involved & it reminded us of the incredible power of joy.

Each wish that you help us grant carries the wish child and their family from a place of uncertainty to a place of hope.

Here is Hunter’s  Circle of Joy  wish story with our heartfelt gratitude for helping us share the magic of a wish with so many inspiring kids throughout our province.

It is our hope that you will share it with your groups, teams, employees & friends. It was a very cool night!

We grant wishes because wishes change lives.

Some of the many wishes we are currently working on are –I wish to meet Elsa from Frozen; I wish to have my own entertainment room; I wish to go body surfing in Hawaii and I wish to have my older sister visit from Uganda.

Thank you SPFK Community for adopting Hunter’s wish.

From all of us at Make-A-Wish, but especially from our wish kids,  thank you for helping us share the power of a wish®.

Ross and the Make-A-Wish BC&YK Team

The full Board of Governors met in Vancouver for a two day session to kick off the 1st Board meeting of the new team.

It was two interesting days which included;

  • Followed in the afternoon by the team “Strategic Planning for the REIBC, with a three year lens”
  • The second day was a great morning with facilitator Kaylee Hansen “Lumina Spark”. Understanding personality profiles and values to maximize the diversity and talent of the amazing leadership team for key institute objectives.
  • The afternoon started with Board of Governors Meeting. Items discussed were:
    • Role of the Board of Governors
    • Honorary member discussion which led to an appointment of Peeter Wesick
    • Full commitment to be a member of 2019 Land Summit
    • Approval of education from Ryerson University and Guelph University for entrance in to the Institute.
    • Executive Entrance was approved
    • University of Calgary education was approved in exemption #2 , 10 years experience
    • The focus of the institute over the next 8 months is on employers.
    • Bylaws will be presented at AGM for changes to the education.
    • A facilitated meeting will take place to discuss Strategic Goal #7 – Organizational Structure
  • Then to wrap up the day we had the great pleasure of Cameron Muir, to have a round table talk about economic and real estate trends.

The commitment that the Board and the REIBC staff provide our Institute and RI professionals is above reproach and I am personally proud to serve the membership.

Canada's REITs on a roll

Frank O'Brien of the Business in Vancouver reported on Canada's REIT's in the September 29th edition of the BIV. He states that after posting dismal numbers earlier this year, real estate investment trusts (REITs) have launched aggressive acquisitions, timely mergers and forays into U.S. real estate in turnaround bids. According to a RBC Capital Markets survey released at this month’s RealREIT conference in Toronto, 29 of Canada’s 56 REITs reported negative numbers in the year’s first half, compared with just two in 2014. REITs, however, are now emerging as nimble players in Western Canada’s commercial real estate arena.

Property Assessments to Property Information

2015_Connie-BC-Assessment-print.jpg

Since its inception in 1974, BC Assessment has earned a reputation as one of the world's leaders in property assessment. Mastering property assessments has meant the collection and analysis of extensive property data.  What’s the value of this data? How can it be utilized beyond BC Assessment and shared with property owners, governments, realtors and researchers? Making the shift from property assessment to property information involves an evolution of work,  people, partnerships and relationships. It requires a carefully prepared pathway for organizational cultural change and the resilience to overcome challenges and resistance along the way.  In short, it requires a fundamental change in the way things are done and how the organization views itself. Join Connie Fair RI,, President & CEO of BC Assessment, as she describes BC Assessment’s transformation from producer of valued property assessments to provider of valuable property information.
