A Message from your Board

Dear Members,

This is a pivotal time for all of us to be in the real estate sector, particularly given the importance of this industry to British Columbia. Of note:
  • BC’s real estate is valued at roughly $2.75 trillion, and generates nearly $1 of every $5 of GDP in the province;
  • Land agency will be central to national ambitions of strengthening energy and transportation infrastructure while concurrently living up to the promise of economic reconciliation with indigenous peoples;
  • Residents face competing priorities of housing affordability with the reality that real estate is a cornerstone of personal assets for many. BC’s residential real estate makes up nearly ¼ of the national valuation, disproportionate to the population share; and
  • The emergence of new asset classes such as data centres while other ICI markets are shifting geographically and demand.
  • Now more than ever, we see the value of a breadth of expertise of RIs and the connection of the Institute across the ecosystem of real estate communities.

As REIBC continues to evolve and build on its strategic priorities, we are preparing for an important leadership transition, Executive Director, Chris Hamade, has announced his decision to step down in the coming months. Since his arrival in 2023, Chris has been instrumental in executing strategic priorities focused on operational excellence, membership growth, and enhancing our industry prominence through strategic partnerships, industry events, and research.

We thank Chris for his dedication, mentorship to staff, and many achievements during his tenure and wish him every success in his future endeavours. A hiring committee is actively leading the recruitment of a successor and updates will be provided as they become available.

Personally, the challenges ahead look like opportunities for REIBC and our members to shine. I look forward to working collaboratively with members, staff, Board and partner associations to advance professional practice in the BC real estate industry.

Best regards,
Jon Burbee, RI - Board President
