The REIBC is visiting Victoria, B.C. on Friday October 3rd, 2014 at Coast Victoria Harbourside Hotel & Marina, 146 Kingston St., Victoria, B. C. V8V 1V4

This will be an excellent opportunity to gain insight on growth, economy, and development in Victoria and the surrounding areas while mingling with your peers. Breakfast and Lunch will be included.

Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin:

Mayor Fortin
Dean Fortin is Mayor of the City of Victoria.

Mayor Fortin ’s top priorities include affordable housing, sustainable growth, and advancing a transportation strategy that meets the needs of the growing region. He is passionate about developing and supporting a strong local economy and a vibrant city.

Mayor Fortin is the Co-Chair for the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness and serves on the Victoria Regional Transit Commission.


Town of Sidney Mayor Larry Cross:

Mayor_Cross2.jpgLarry Cross has been the Mayor of Sidney since 2008.  He is also the President of the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities (AVICC), a member of the UBCM Executive and sits on the Capital Regional District (CRD) Board and Municipal Finance Authority Board (MFABC). This diverse work in local government provides him with a broad perspective of the economy, growth and development on the Island.

Under Mayor Cross’ leadership, the Town of Sidney has developed a number of strategies, polices and bylaws focused on growing a dynamic, inclusive, vibrant community. This includes the Town’s award winning zoning bylaw which cuts through red tape and encourages density, and the Mayor’s Downtown Revitalization Task Force with a mandate to formulate achievable actions and strategies to improve economic opportunities and foster a revitalized and resilient town centre.  

The Saanich Peninsula is the manufacturing and industrial hub of the Island producing over $650 million in revenues and employing 2,200 + employees generating a $110 million payroll. With all of this happening in Sidney’s back yard, Larry Cross is a municipal leader who can provide insight into what works and how to drive a community’s growth in a positive direction.

Greg Steves, MCP, RI, Executive Director, Housing Policy Branch, Office of Housing and Construction Standards:

As Executive Director of the Housing Policy Branch, Greg Steves leads a diverse group of professionals on issues ranging from homelessness to affordable and rental housing policy. Under Greg's guidance, the Branch is responsible for the provincial housing strategy, Housing Matters BC, and administering the Strata Property Act.

Prior to becoming Executive Director, Greg was Director of Strategic Real Estate Partnerships for Shared Services BC, and Manager of Social Housing Policy for the Office of Housing and Construction Standards. Greg has a graduate degree in City Planning from the University of Manitoba.
