Let's retire "retirement"!

years ago

Graham Allen, former President of the Institute, has left the fulltime practice of law yet will not agree that this step constitutes "retirement". He views it as a transition to a new phase of life but not one revolving around slowing down and relaxation; instead, it will be geared towards 20 years of productive work. In Graham's case, he is committed towards creating a fulltime career from human rights campaigning. There is admittedly a certain element of "jumping off a cliff" involved in such an objective, but he does have a practical foundation.

Graham completed an LL.M. in International Human Rights law last year, writing his thesis on the world campaign to abolish the death penalty.  As well, he has for many years volunteered for Amnesty International's Business and Human Rights work, and participated regularly in its "Urgent Action" program. So these three areas will be the building blocks for what he hopes to achieve, with the first campaign being the plight of Ronald Smith, the only Canadian known to be on death row anywhere in the world (Montana). Let the work begin....

REIBC wishes Graham well with his future endeavours and congratulates him on his “not retirement.”

President’s Luncheon

blair_news.jpgThe 2012 President’s Luncheon was a great success.  It was sold out on November 17th with 164 guests.  President-Elect Mandy Hansen emceed the event and kept things running smoothly.  Joining us at the event were MLA Linda Reid and MLA Rob Howard, RI, Mayor Richard Walton from the District of North Vancouver and Acting Mayor Larry Robinson from White Rock along with many other distinguished guests.  The Guest Speaker, Blair Hagkull spoke about Vancouver and it position globally in 2020.  He presented the key drivers of the global competitiveness of cities, tracking investment, jobs and reputation.  In his presentation, Blair examined the global hierarchies, hotspots and hazards in the Top 300 cities and evaluated the key choices for people, capital and companies.  Blair has graciously agreed to let REIBC put his presentation on our website. Thank you Blair. It is posted under events.

There were two door prizes at the President’s Luncheon.  2 tickets to Cirque du Soleil were won by Cam MacGregor of Concert Properties and a night stay at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia was won by Zina Weston of BC Assessment.  Congratulations to you both.

REIBC would like to thank the sponsors.  Without them, an event of this magnitude would not be able to take place.  Thank you to The Real Estate Foundation for their generous support, the Table Sponsors – Concert Properties, Conecon, Ernst & Young, Morguard,  Sauder School of Business, Real Estate Division, and the Society of Notaries Public.  We also had sponsorship from the Real Estate Council of BC and Homeowners Protection Office of BC Housing.

Board Report

On Thursday December 6th, your Board of Governors held the final Board meeting of the 2012 calendar year. The following is a brief synopsis of what took place during the meeting:

  • It is with regret that I announce that Mark Litwin (Governor, Vancouver Island) has chosen to resign his position on the Board of Governors. Mark has found that personal and business commitments have hindered his ability to fulfill his duties to the Institute. Mark’s keen insight will be missed. The Board of Governors thanks Mark for his efforts.
  • The resignation of Mr. Litwin has created an opening on the Member Services Committee. Governor Peter Bretherton has agreed to take over this spot on the committee. Thank you, Peter, for filling this vacancy.
  • Internal Board procedures were discussed in relation to recording of motions. It has been decided that motions will not be deemed to be the responsibility of one Board member, but rather the responsibility of the Board. Going forward, motions will be recorded in minutes to show moved/seconded/and whether carried or defeated.
  • A Board Calendar/Work Plan has been created to enable Board Members to reference upcoming events or Committee requirements. A motion to create the Calendar/Work Plan was Carried.
  • The Interview form was reviewed and some minor changes were made. The new form appears to be more user-friendly and enhances dialogue between interviewer/interviewee.
  • A policy was brought forward to note when Requests for Proposals would be beneficial to the members of the Institute and be a guideline for staff. The RFP’s would cost the same as postings for job opportunities on our website. A policy for the placement of Request for Proposals on the website was adopted.
  • Following up on discussion from the September Board meeting, information was brought forward to the Board regarding dues for Student Members. Further research needs to be undertaken to determine how many Student Members go on to become Professional Members.
  • Membership Dues will increase in accordance to the inflation rate (1.2%) for the 2013/2014 fiscal year.
  • The 2013/2014 fiscal year budget was presented and discussed. The budget was approved by the Board.
  • The two major scholarships the Institute presents each year(BCIT and Langara) are being topped up so that students receive around $750 from each scholarship.  Monies will be allocated to make this happen.
  • It has been decided that there will be no advertising on our website at this time. We believe our website is of outstanding quality and allowance of advertising could affect that quality.

I hope this Holiday Season brings you all great happiness as you enjoy it with your family and friends. Seasons Greetings from The Real Estate Institute Board Of Governors.

Respectfully submitted,

John Castle
Governor for Cariboo/Northwest Prince Rupert
