Meet Cristiana Valero, Student Member
 |
The real estate development sector has opened up many exciting opportunities for me in the past 10 years. Whether involved in small scale projects or large developments that shaped an entire community, I had the pleasure of working with passionate and driven individuals, who have inspired me to further my skill-sets and my career in this area.
As a Land Development Associate working for SmartREIT, I thrive on the challenge of taking a project from concept to reality. What I find most interesting is working in collaboration with a professional team of architects, designers and consultants to achieve a final product that delivers a perfect combination of community / government’s views while meeting the shareholders / owner’s expectations.
|
As a fully integrated development company, SmartREIT gives me the ability to achieve the most challenging tasks by providing direct access to legal, engineering, marketing, finance, and estimating personnel. To complement my real estate development skill-set I decided to pursue the Diploma in Real Estate Development at UBC. The Real Estate Development specialization program broadened my view of projects evaluation, development potential, and site planning, which sparked an interest on mixed use, urban, and more challenging projects.
Originally from Brazil, I enjoy discovering Canada’s diverse culture. During my free time I like visiting new communities by taking small weekend trips with my boyfriend, and have recently taken an interest in learning French.

Meet Laura West, AACI.P.App.,RI
 |
In my career in Commercial Appraisal I have had the opportunity to appraise many different asset classes including multi-family, commercial, industrial, development and some special use properties like a campground and a marina come to the top of my mind. The special use properties are the most memorable with the most interesting quirks and challenges influencing the value.
I was awarded my AACI, P. App. and my RI in the spring of this year. The past 4 years I spent in this industry have been rewarding and full of talented and eager mentors. In an attempt to get involved I have served two 2 year terms on the Executive for the Appraisal Institute of Canada Vancouver Chapter and have enjoyed serving my community, colleagues and friends.
|
Every year we are required to get CPD credits and I am currently taking the Machinery and Equipment Valuation course. This just goes to show how diverse and rich this field is and that there’s always another challenge and something new to learn.
One thing I know for sure is that I will never get bored in this field because there are just too many asset classes and too many reasons for an appraisal that I couldn’t experience them all in one lifetime. Overall, I am looking forward to continue learning, growing and expanding myself in all the ways that are available through my memberships in the Appraisal Institute of Canada and the Real Estate Institute of BC.

Toastmasters Survey
On September 9, 2016 a survey on whether you would participate in a Toastmasters club was closed. We had 213 completed surveys returned. From those 213 completed surveys 20% said yes they would participate and 80% said no, they would not. As we drilled down further there were not enough members from any one area to consider doing the legwork to put together a club. We need over 20 people to start a club and our numbers from the survey did not allow us to do that.
We thank you for participating and responding as it gave us the information we required to make an informed decision on your behalf.
