2009 BC Land Summit

More than 800 delegates attended the 2009 BC Land Summit in Whistler, BC. The conference, which took place May 20-22, 2009, at the Whistler Telus Conference Centre, presented a unique opportunity to examine the issues, challenges and opportunities facing professionals involved in the many areas of land use across British Columbia and beyond. This event explored opportunities for collaboration among land use professionals in British Columbia and the benefits that closer ties will bring.

The 2009 BC Land Summit was an interdisciplinary conference organized by six professional organizations (BC Association Appraisal Institute of Canada, British Columbia Institute of Agrologists, British Columbia Landscape Architects, Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia, Planning Institute of British Columbia, and the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia), all of whom share ties to land use in BC and combined their 2009 annual conferences into this joint venture.

Conference details and delegate feedback will be available in our upcoming fall issue of input magazine.

Smart Growth on the Ground Charrette in Prince George

Smart Growth on the Ground (SGOG) held their Prince George charrette from May 12-15, 2009. The four-day event consisted of inpirational presentations from various designers and team members, outlining the hopes and dreams of a future vision of downtown Prince George.

There were two public events held during the charrette - the Mid-course review and the Final Presentation. These public events were a great opportunity for community members to give their feedback to the charrette team. The public review contained a presentation delivered by charrette team members, Q & A from the audience, time to view drawings pinned to the walls and provide feedback on the direction of the team's work.

Beginning in July 2008, SGOG has been working with the citizens of Prince George and their elected leaders to transform their downtown to a more sustainable neighbourhood. SGOG in Prince George marked the first time that this approach has been replicated in northern British Columbia, and will also be the first SGOG experience in a city that serves as a regional centre.

SGOG is a unique program formed by Smart Growth BC, Design Centre for Sustainability at UBC, and the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia.
