Member News

Daniel-Jones-2.jpgThe REIBC is pleased to announce that Dan Jones who is a current Director for Vancouver Chapter, has been elected by his peers at the B.C. Provincial Board of Directors of the Appraisal Institute of Canada to the NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS for the Appraisal Institute of Canada in Ottawa. Dan will be inducted this June at the NATIONAL AIC AGM in Calgary. Dan has been a designated member of the Real Estate Institute of B.C. since 1978 and an active volunteer with the Vancouver Chapter since 1996. The Vancouver Chapter and the Real Estate Institute of Canada congratulate Dan on his new position.

Our office had the opportunity to speak with Chris Kyle this week. Chris has been an RI since 1995. He golfed in the 2012 Charity Golf Tournament and was on the winning team of Todd Mikl. Chris went on to tell us that the team started off with an eagle at the first hole and it just got better from there. He was the only RI to play on the Mikl foursome and they won the tourney. He looks forward to the 2013 tournament on June 19th. Congratulations to Chris and the team. Chris is the Principle of Kyle Properties Strata Management since 1994.

CHAPTER EVENTS

The Vancouver Chapter held a Casino Night on February 28, 2013. The evaluations noted that everyone in attendance had a great time and would attend another. As you can see from the photo, the poker table was very popular and it was quite intense for a while. The players were reminded that it was not real money, so they could breathe a little. The turnout was a little smaller than anticipated, although it could have been because of the gale force winds and driving rain that kept some away. The chapter purchased some great door prizes and the big prize winner was Stephanie Shiu who won the iPad Mini. Congratulations Stephanie.

On March 7, 2013 the Thompson/Okanagan Chapter held a webinar entitled “Marketing and Building Your Brand.” The webinar was facilitated by Curt Broughton, Chapter Chair and presented by Jeff Ciecko. Everyone that participated thought that it was a great webinar and are looking forward to the next one. Thank you Thompson/Okanagan Chapter for stepping up to the plate to host a webinar. The following email was received from a participant.

“Thanks REIBC! The webinar was great; very informative for a beginner like me!
Janette O’Keeffe”

We will be holding another webinar on April 10, 2013 with Gordon Price from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Mark your calendars and watch for registration and further information in your in box.

Career Opportunities

Award of Excellence

The membership of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia includes many individuals who provide outstanding service to the Institute, to the real estate industry generally, and to their own communities. The Institute recognizes select professional members who have achieved service excellence in each of these areas by awarding them with the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia's Award of Excellence. The Award of Excellence is a formal recognition of members who have distinguished themselves over their careers and have contributed significantly to the advancement of the Institute, to the broader real estate industry and to their individual communities. NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON MAY 10, 2013 For more information and nomination forms please click here.

Advertising & Sponsorship

Over the years we have asked many questions regarding advertising in the INPUT and how our members feel about that. The response is a glowing “if we don’t have to, please don’t”. We have a few advertisers now (8 in total I believe) and we are trying to move towards sponsorship for the magazine rather than advertising. We pride ourselves on putting out a magazine that is easy to read, informative and not full of advertisers. So we are making a few changes with our advertising and sponsorship.
We are looking for sponsors for the INPUT magazine. You can see in the Winter 2013 Edition on Heritage how we have showcased our sponsors. Our website reflects the changes as well. Of course the perfect scenario would be to have one sponsor for the entire magazine. Maggie is doing a great job getting our sponsors. Also in the latest edition of INPUT you will see the directory pages which is new to us as well. This is a great way to highlight your business in an inexpensive yet workable way. We thank all of you for your support.

You will also note that we have advertising in this edition of the newsletter. If you have any questions regarding the sponsorships or advertising, please feel free to contact Maggie at marketing@reibc.org.

Professional Excellence Program

Over the last 3 years REIBC has created a Professional Excellence Program for their members to assess their soft skills in their chosen profession. You may recall an article that Charles Johnstone wrote for the INPUT magazine regarding this program. You can check that article out here. It’s on page 27.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to check out this program, login to the REIBC website and go under member page and click on the Professional Excellence Program. It will take you about 20 minutes to complete and the information will be invaluable.

BOARD REPORT

The February Board of Governor’s meeting was held via conference call. We started the meeting with a discussion about a Leave of Absence Request for a member. Based on the circumstances surrounding the request the board determined it would review these type of applications on a case by case basis and look at the merits of the request.

We also discussed Non-Standard Professional Member Applications. The applicant was fully qualified but lacked an RI proposer based on their geographic location being outside of the province. The Board decided to accept this new member based on his qualifications and expertise meeting the requirements for membership.

The Board reviewed the status of the upcoming Elections. All chapters will be holding elections this year and motions were passed for Bonnie Knight(Vancouver Island) and Brad Currie (Fraser Valley) to be appointed as Governors until June 30, 2013 for their respective Districts.

Finally, the Board reviewed student membership and is pleased with the number of students that are becoming candidate and professional members. The board will also revisit this issue annually as a part of the upcoming work plan.

Respectfully submitted by
Troy Abromaitis, RI
Vancouver Governor
