This month the Institute would like to remind our members of our upcoming events: the 2011 Presidents Luncheon and the Vancouver Chapter Christmas Reception. We will also like to give our members an update on how our past events went and share the latest news.
Board of Governors Update
Since our last update, there have been two meetings of your Board of Governors; one in person, and the other via conference call.
The in-person meeeting was held at the end of September. The first half of the session was reviewing the Strategic Plan and establishing new goals for this year. It was an excellent session, resulting in real targets for continuing to provide the membership value and opportunities throughout the coming year. The second half was a meeting of the Board and a number of issues were discussed. Next year's symposium planning is well underway, and you are in for an exciting day so watch for the invitation. We are going to be improving our social media presence in order to better communicate events and initiatives with the members and the public. The Board also spoke about criteria for exceptions to the standard membership requirements.
The latest meeting was held via conference call at the end of October. The Board reviewed the specific activities relating to the Strategic Plan for next year, and will be finalizing those in the December meeting. There was much discussion on what was to be achieved, and how it could be measured at the end of the year. We also discussed research report opportunities, and examined what topics would be of interest to the members.
This is the Board report for this session. We have the annual President's Luncheon as well as the Vancouver Chapter Holiday Event coming in December. I hope to see you there!

The Vancouver Chapters of REIBC and BCAAIC Present "Changes in Real Estate Law" with Mr. Greg Blue, Q.C
Approximately 20 real estate professionals participated in a joint event at the Terminal City Club on October 20 to discuss recent proposals for changes in real property law. Our guest speaker was Greg Blue, Senior Staff Lawyer at the BC Law Institute. The BC Law Institute is a private society formed in 1977 under the Society Act. They are dedicated to objective, non partisan law reform.
His presentation focussed on four main areas of real estate law being discussed as part of the Real Property Reform Project.
- Restrictive Covenants
- Joint Tenancy
- Partition of Property Act
- Accounting and Contribution Rights between Co-Owners
There were a number of excellent questions from the attendees and the feedback from the event evaluation forms was very positive.
The project committee and BCLI are still seeking comments from readers at the present time on the law reform proposlas in the consultation papers. Consultation papers are available on the page for teh Real Property Reform Project under the "Projects" link on the BCLI website at: www.bcli.org
