Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities (CMBS)

In this session CMLS Financial will provide a comprehensive overview of the Canadian commercial mortgage debt market with a focus on commercial mortgage backed securities (CMBS). 

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, CMLS Financial is one of Canada’s leading non-bank mortgage lenders. With offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax, CMLS originates approximately $2.5 billion of commercial mortgages per annum. CMLS is one of the only Canadian commercial mortgage servicing agents with a rating from DBRS and Fitch, servicing a portfolio exceeding $10 billion. CMLS also provides mortgage valuation and related services to institutional mortgage investors across Canada.

Mark Achtemichuk, Managing Director and Vice President, CMLS Financial

M AchtimechukMark is a Managing Director and Vice President at CMLS Financial, Canada’s mortgage company.  Since joining CMLS Financial in 2010, Mark has led the Company’s Mortgage Valuation and Analytics division, growing the group almost 10 fold during this time.  The division has become a significant developer of new technology and recently launched its first commercial software solution, Target Asset Management.  Mark began his career at KPMG, first in Vancouver, then joining the M&A practice in Los Angeles.  He was a project manager and head of finance for a large, western Canadian developer and ran his own business advising real estate developers in a ‘CFO for hire’ role focused on raising debt and equity capital, developing accounting teams, and assisting in work-out situations.   

Sam Brown, Director, CMLS Financial

SamSam is a Director in the securitization and fund management arm of CMLS Financial.  In this role, Sam shares responsibility for CMLS Financial’s securitized lending platforms including loan origination, adjudication, pricing, hedging and structuring.  Since launching its program in 2011, CMLS Financial has originated over $1.5 billion in commercial mortgage loans earmarked for securitization and securitized over $1.3 billion through conduit and single borrower CMBS transactions. In addition to commercial real estate lending and securitization experience, Sam has experience as a commercial real estate borrower working within the HSBC Group’s global real estate investment platform out of London, UK and advisory experience with KPMG in both Vancouver and London. 

 

Flood Plain Mapping

Damian Stathonikos, Director of Communications and Public Affairs, British Columbia Real Estate Association

Damian
Damian Stathonikos is the Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the British Columbia Real Estate Association. He and his team are responsible for the Association’s government relations efforts. Floodplain mapping has been a priority issue for BCREA since 2011 when the Association started to advocate for existing floodplain maps to be updated, providing communities with accurate information on which to base decisions about growth and safety. In 2013, BCREA held a stakeholder workshop that resulted in the Floodplain Maps Action Plan. 

 

  

Medical Marijuana Facilities

Mayor Jack Froese, Mayor, Township of Langley

Mayor Froese will address the communities concerns about public safety and the environment regarding the production of medical marijuana facilities within the Township of Langley. The Federal Government’s Medical Purposes Regulations and the ALR’s designated zoning bylaw of acceptable Farm Use Practices, and how do local governments move forward with the dichotomy of these regulations.

For 36 years, Mayor Jack Froese has lived, worked, and raised a family in Langley. Jack and his wife Debbie owned and operated a turkey farm and turkey wholesale business which is now managed by their children. He is also a retired police officer from the Vancouver Police Department.

Through responsible, accountable leadership, Mayor Froese works in cooperation with Council, other elected officials, and members of the community to ensure the Township of Langley remains a thriving residential and business destination.

With a vision for enhanced economic activity and job creation, improved transportation, and safe, well-serviced communities, he is dedicated to providing an exceptional quality of life for those who live and work in the Township, now and in the future.

Mayor Froese sits on many local and regional boards including Metro Vancouver, TransLink and Fraser Health.

Jack’s community service includes volunteering as the Director of Security for the 2010 Summer Games. Jack volunteered with the 2013 Special Olympics, currently volunteers with the BC Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and is looking forward to volunteering with the 2014 BC Senior’s Games.

In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal.

Jack and his wife Debbie have seven grandsons and on August 27, 2014 they welcomed their first granddaughter!

Darcy BomfordDarcy was founder and CEO of Darford International Inc., a former publicly traded TSX-V company with a twenty-five year history of manufacturing and marketing pet supplements, treats and food. Darcy oversaw three federally inspected and certified organic plants in the US and Canada that manufactured specialized, all-natural, branded and co-packed products for the specialty pet, mass and grocery industry.

Mr. Bomford founded True Leaf Medicine in early 2014 and positioned it as the ‘Quality of Life’ company, dedicated to enhancing lives by improving wellness with responsible scientific research in collaboration with the medical community.

Chris MacCauleyA proven professional in the industrial market, Chris has built many strong relationships with companies in Metro Vancouver and across Canada. His expertise, hard work and attention to detail and a strong educational background have yielded him an outstanding track record. Chris sits on the board of NAIOP Vancouver - The Commercial Real Estate Development Association and chairs the Governmental Relations and Development Issues Committee.

Chris specializes in sales and leasing of development land and buildings, as well as build-to-suits and sale/leasebacks.

The title of his presentation is: The shortage of developable industrial land in Metro Vancouver. 

 

NAIOP Case Competition

Tsur Sommerville and group

Top undergraduate academic real estate programs in the world enter teams of six real estate students to compete in an exciting and enriching academic event . Each team has five days to prepare their analysis and make a recommendation on the case, which is based on an actual commercial real estate transaction. Teams present their analysis to a panel of judges, who determine a winner based on the best overall analysis and presentation. The teams are judged not only on their investment recommendation, their approach to the problem, and their presentation skills, but also on their ability to answer and respond to direct and probing questions posed by the judges.

UBC won in November 2014 and they will join us with their winning analysis.
