BC Land Summit
The 2014 BC Land Summit was held on May 14th-16th at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Downtown Vancouver. Building on the success of the 2009 Land Summit held up in Whistler B.C., the BC Land Summit Society planned and executed yet another successful event.
Keynote speakers Astronaut Chris Hadfield, BNN co-host and anchor Catherine Murray, Anthropologist Wade Davis and Queens Council Louis Mandell spoke to more than 750 delegates on four key areas of Land Use; Food & Agriculture, Law & the Land, The Natural & Built Environment and Water & the Land.
This year’s program also included a range of diverse elements including hands-on workshops, informative panel presentations and breakout session, as well as mobile workshop tours and many wonderful opportunities for professional networking.
Delegates of this year’s BC Land Summit attended a memorable networking event – the Summit Celebration Reception at the Vancouver Aquarium where they had a chance to network while being entertained by a pair of friendly otters, sea-lions and two beautiful dancing dolphins! The Closing Reception was held at the Telus World of Science where delegates networked and engaged in hands-on science experiments testing both their knowledge in the sciences!
The B.C. Land Summit thanks all of those who attended this year’s event.

All Land Summit participants had the opportunity to take part in a fun, inclusive Scavenger Hunt. Participants were asked a number of questions that revolved around their Land Summit participation. We would like to congratulate the winners of the Scavengers Hunt at the BC Land Summit. A special REIBC congratulations goes to our members Joshua Kitsul, Cathy Colborne, Amanda Wilms, Michael Bose and Andrea Fletcher.

Langara Industry Night
On May 6, 2014 REIBC members representing a variety of real estate professions spoke at Langara during their Industry Night. This event is intended to introduce individuals interested in the profession of real estate to a range of practice areas and sectors. Given the diversity of the Institute's membership, we were able to bring in professionals from several fields. On hand to speak about their professions were: - Katya Teslenko, Appraisal, BC Assessment - Leslie Bessey, Property Management, Gateway Property Management - Daniel John, Residential Realtor - Eugen Klein, Commercial Sales and Leasing. Mandy Hansen was on hand to speak about the Institute, and its role in uniting the real estate profession under one multi-sector organization, and the importance of having professional designations as a symbol of a professionals achievements. It was a fun and informative evening, and we thank the members who gave their time to share their knowledge with the next generation of professionals.

Leaky condo crisis rears its head again in B.C.
Do you remember the “leaky-condo” problems from a few years back? Evidence now suggests that a second wave in B.C.’s leaky-condo crisis is beginning to emerge!
With legislation having changed and depreciation reports being mandated on strata corporations it is becoming increasingly clear that the leaky-condo problem is far from over. The process of obtaining a depreciation report is forcing strata corporation to own up to the condition of their properties and the shortcomings of maintenance programs from structures that weren’t fixed in the first wave of repairs.

Historic Hotel Vancouver for Sale!
Two of Canada’s most famous hotels – Vancouvers Hotel Vancouver and Toronto’s Royal York have been put up for sale by Quebec’s Caisse, de depot et placement do Quebec. The Hotel Vancouver opened in 1939, for the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth .The pension plan’s real estate division, Ivanhoe Cambridge now only owns 10 hotels down from a total of 70 from a few years back. The cost of maintaining historic properties has been soaring and a lot of thought had been put into whether or not more investment would be put into the hotels. Daniel Fournier, Chief Executive of Ivanhoe Cambridge said in an interview last year “They’re phenomenal assets, [but] hugely challenging because the capital required is immense, but you just know that something special could and should happen”.
The change in ownership could lead to significant alterations at the properties, although they will almost certainly continue to be run as Farimont hotels. Fairmont’s contract to operate both runs for several decades and the company will play a role in choosing the buyer.
