REIBC launches new Website
On August 25, 2015 we launched our new website. This site is much different than in the past; the premise of this site is to promote you! That being said, you should update your bio as the fields are larger and please include your photo. This is another tool for you to promote yourself and we are pleased to assist you.
IMPORTANT Message about OCCUPATIONS
Many of you have clicked off a number of occupations that you are involved in. After much discussion it was felt that the member profile needed to have a primary occupation and a secondary occupation. Please login to your member profile and select primary and secondary occupation. This is how you will be searched.
For now if you had more than one occupation checked off, we chose 2 of them to be on the site. It was totally random, so it may not be correct. Please review your profile and make any necessary changes so that your occupation is correct. The RI logo with Designated Real Estate professional is available on the site under members only. We encourage you to login and use it on all of your printed material and your website.
We hope you like the new website and as always we appreciate your feedback and any thoughts you may have. Please direct any comments, questions, or suggestions to info@reibc.org and we will get back to you .
Play Ball!
On August 26, 2015 REIBC sponsored a Vancouver Canadians game to display the new logo and to start the campaign that RIs are designated, educated, experienced and connected! The ball game was sold out (6,013) people and there were over 40 people with the Institute group. Past President Jason Grant threw out the first pitch and we debuted a commercial regarding the RIs. You can see that commercial on our new website.
The Canadians lost the ball game, although everyone that attended had a great time and now we continue to move forward with letting everyone know what the RI designation stands for.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made this evening a memorable one for the Institute.
Ben Wedge, Student member

Ben Wedge, Vice President of Communications for the BCIT Real Estate Association 2014-2015, graduated from BCIT in the summer of 2015. After graduation Ben took a position with the Specialized Assets Group at Jones Lang LaSalle, a global commercial real estate firm. His new position involves due diligence and research for the assets that the two senior brokers of the group valuate and market. With “specialized assets” ranging from private islands, to marinas, to golf courses, Ben is excited about and enjoying the work that he is currently doing. He is thankful for the networking functions that REIBC put on – they were fun, and helped him get an understanding of what he might want to do after graduation.

Rent Increases
Landlords can only increase the rent once a year by an amount permitted by law or an additional amount approved in advance by an arbitrator – they need to use the right form and give the tenant three full months’ notice of the rent increase.
- The maximum allowable rent increase changes each year. The limits for residential tenancies and manufactured home park tenancies are different. For residential tenancies, the standard allowable rent increase for 2016 is 2.9%
- For manufactured home park tenancies, the standard allowable rent increase for 2015 is 2.9% plus a proportional amount for the change in local government levies and regulated utility fees.

Pembina Institute - Pathways to Net-Zero Buildings in B.C.
Past President Mandy Hansen was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Real Estate Foundation of BC in April of 2015. Mandy participated on behalf of the Foundation at the Pathway to Net-Zero Buildings Thought Leadership Forum hosted in early June.
The following is the information from Pembina Institute.
We've been busy writing up a summary report from our Pathways to Net-Zero Buildings that we hosted in early June. The report is now available on our website.
At the forum, the Pembina Institute brought together over 80 individuals representing over 50 organizations, institutions and companies, including representatives from local and provincial government, the building industry (e.g. developers, builders, architects, engineers, and consultants), utilities, and research/advocacy groups.
Participants discussed what is needed to evolve provincial building standards so that all new buildings are "net-zero ready" (i.e. so energy efficient that they could generate on-site as much energy as they consume over the course of a year) within the next 15 years.
We believe B.C. can make a leap to net-zero ready buildings by 2030. How? Check out the policy proposal section of the report to find out. Here's a sneak peek: we call for significant investments in pilot programs (similar to Brussels' Exemplary Building Program), for the B.C. government to lead by example and require new public buildings to be net-zero ready, and for a transparent process to set future energy efficiency requirements in the B.C. Building Code so that industry can plan ahead.
The government currently seeking input on its Climate Leadership Plan, and the building sector is a key area being considered for reducing carbon pollution. We wanted to make our recommendations broadly available to help inform your input into this process.

Guest Speaker: Ms. Connie Fair, President & CEO of BC Assessment Property Assessments to Property Information
|
 |
Since its inception in 1974, BC Assessment has earned a reputation as one of the world's leaders in property assessment. Mastering property assessments has meant the collection and analysis of extensive property data. What’s the value of this data? How can it be utilized beyond BC Assessment and shared with property owners, governments, realtors and researchers? Making the shift from property assessment to property information involves an evolution of work, people, partnerships and relationships. It requires a carefully prepared pathway for organizational cultural change and the resilience to overcome challenges and resistance along the way. In short, it requires a fundamental change in the way things are done and how the organization views itself. Join Connie Fair, President & CEO of BC Assessment, as she describes BC Assessment’s transformation from producer of valued property assessments to provider of valuable property information.
