Title: Where private and public overlap: innovative affordable housing partnership in B.C.

Summary:

BC Housing is the provincial crown agency responsible for creating, operating and maintaining affordable housing opportunities for B.C.’s most vulnerable citizens. Historically, this has been achieved with purpose-built rental housing primarily for seniors, low-income families, and people with disabilities. Over the years, new challenges have arisen: low vacancy rates and high housing costs have increased the financial strain on low-income households across the housing spectrum, while social and economic pressures have contributed to a tenant population with more specialized needs than ever before.

Responding to these changes requires more than just housing. Over the past 40+ years, BC Housing has evolved and grown to take on the Homeowner Protection Office, regulation and research projects for private market housing, private capital projects and mixed market and social housing projects. This emerging link between private sector and social purpose real estate is highlighted in projects like the redevelopment of the Riverview Lands, the co-op land trust and 41 East Hastings.

Are these innovative partnerships the solution to integrating safe and affordable housing for all in our communities? In this session, Shayne Ramsay, CEO of BC Housing will discuss the pros, cons, and lessons learned from recent private sector collaborations.
