Job Description / Duties

The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and ensures the sustainable management of forests, wildlife, water and other land-based resources. The Ministry works in an integrated way with the other natural resource ministries and with Indigenous communities to strengthen and diversify economies.

The South Coast Region Authorization’s team regulates land and water in BC’s dense, diverse, and ecologically rich South Coast Region. Crown Land Authorizations is a results-focused team that specializes in land decisions for natural resource management in the South Coast Region.

Reporting to the Section Head, the Senior Crown Land Specialist will be a part of a dynamic team finding land-based solutions to a wide range of complex natural resource projects. Their specialized expertise in land will help inform how best to align and resolve opposing interests prior to decision under the Land Act. The South Coast has a complex geography of overlapping land interests requiring special consideration in decisions. This includes but is not limited to: economic, recreational, cultural, institutional, and residential development; high ecological value; projected pressures from climate change; and, rich and diverse Indigenous cultures. They will support the Province’s commitment to the application of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act through strengthened partnerships and meaningful engagement with Indigenous peoples in the management of the land base and natural resources in BC.

The primary purpose of this position is to forge strong working relationships across multiple agencies, to find the balance between economic development ,environmental integrity, and Indigenous interests necessary to support the disposition and tenuring of Crown Land. They will deal with complex natural resource issues involving multiple stakeholders and First Nations. They will bridge environmental, social and economic disciplines of natural resource management to advance land policy, ministry priorities and strategies, and operational delivery of land authorizations, in partnership with First Nations, communities, and agencies.

One position is available via this competition focused on senior-level regional Crown Land authorizations. The ideal candidates are flexible with a focus on long-term solutions. They have experience working with Indigenous peoples and are adept at collaborative planning. They are experienced in project management, having demonstrated the implementation of creative solutions to complete complex projects. They are knowledgeable about land dispositions with preference for those with real estate, land appraisal, and crown grant experience.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:


Master’s Degree in a resource management field, business, economics, planning, urban land economics, or equivalent, plus 2 years of related experience; OR,
Bachelor's Degree in a resource management field, business, economics, planning, urban land economics, or equivalent, plus 3 years of related experience; OR,
Diploma in a resource management field, business, economics, planning, urban land economics, or equivalent, plus 5 years of related experience.


Related Experience includes:

Experience leading and managing complex projects.
Experience resolving conflict in a manner that satisfies partners with varying and opposing interests.
Experience in finding solutions to Land disposition challenges.


Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

Regional operations and authorizations experience.
Training or course work in project management.
Training in real estate appraisal
Experience managing licensing and leasing documents and agreements, authorizations, and Crown grants.
Experience in First Nation engagement and consultation.

Salary: $72,724.97 - $83,014.85 annually
